The Addison Central School District is seeking a 12-month Bus Mechanic. The work involves responsibility for the performance of skilled automotive mechanic tasks required for the maintenance and repair of a fleet of school buses as well as, when necessary, all other school-owned vehicles. The work is carried out in accordance with safe, well-established standard maintenance and repair procedures, and involves the skilled repair and maintenance, including major repair, of all school buses and other automotive equipment owned by the school district. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-level Head Bus mechanic or Transportation Supervisor, with some leeway allowed the incumbent for the exercise of independent judgment in doing whatever is necessary so that equipment complies with approved standards of safety and operation. Direct supervision is exercised over the activities of subordinate assistants/helpers or Garage Laborers if they are also employed. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Performs a variety of repairs to buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors, riding mowers, and other machinery and equipment;
Plans and oversees the work of helpers/assistants and any maintenance tasks performed by drivers;
Repairs and replaces springs, axles, wheel bearings, transmissions, clutches, brake systems, pumps, carburetors/fuel injectors, etc.;
Repairs ignition systems, generators, regulators, etc.;
Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
Makes minor welding repairs to body and chassis;
Paints bus bodies and repairs interiors including seats and windows;
Maintains records of parts and supplies used and prepares requisitions;
Drives school buses on a test run basis, and may be required to drive a school bus on a substitute basis when needed.; and
Other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
